Universal Children’s Day
International Children’s Day is celebrated annually on November 20. In 1954, in order to prevent children from working long hours in unsafe conditions; to give all children the opportunity to learn; and to strive for the realization of many other rights of children, the United Nations General Assembly recommended that all countries establish an International Children’s Day on an “appropriate” day. On November 20, 1959, the United Nations adopted the Declaration of the Rights of the Child, which spelled out the specific rights of all children. Since then, Children’s Day has been celebrated on November 20 each year.

The day was originally known as “Tango Tour”. It was called Boys’ Day in honor of boys, and Girls’ Day was celebrated on March 3. However, in 1948, the government decreed that this day be a national holiday to celebrate the happiness of all children and to express gratitude to their mothers. Renamed Kodomo no Hi, in Japan, Children’s Day is a holiday celebrating the lives of children. The holiday is thought to have originated in China, where people would hang herbs to prevent childhood diseases. In Japan, people usually celebrate by giving children kites and hanging ribbons.
